Jättenattljusolja vid hud- och hormonrelaterade besvär

När det kommer till jättenattljusolja så är det framför allt hälsoproblem relaterat till hormonbalansen så som PMS och klimakteriebesvär, och olika typer av hudproblem som forskare visat intresse för. Anledning är oljans rika innehåll av omega-6 fettsyran GLA.

Jättenattljusolja vid hud- och hormonrelaterade besvär

Jättenattljus är en tvåårig ört som tillhör dunörtsväxterna. Den kommer ursprungligen från Nordamerika och på 1700-talet hittade den sin väg till vår del av världen. Idag växer jättenattljus vilt i stora delar av Europa inklusive Sverige. Den har vackra, gula blommor som öppnar sig i skymningen och därav sitt namn. När blomman vissnar ersätts den med en fröskida med värdefulla frön vilka av man extraherar den uppskattade jättenattljusoljan. Oljan har under lång tid använts som ett naturmedel för sitt rika innehåll av den essentiella fettsyran GLA, som har betydelse för många viktiga kroppsfunktioner.

GLA (gammalinolensyra) fungerar som ett förstadium till prostaglandin, en grupp eikosanoider, hormonliknande ämnen som produceras i flera av kroppens vävnader och organ. Prostaglandinerna reglerar i sin tur många processer i kroppen så som t.ex. hormonbalansen, blodtillförseln till vävnader, uppbyggnad av hud, hår och naglar. Brist på prostaglandiner kan därför visa sig på många olika sätt. T.ex. kan det göra att huden förlorar sin smidighet, blir torr, rynkig, solkänslig och helt enkelt åldras snabbare. Brist kan även ge upphov till olika hudproblem som eksem, dermatit, akne och andra besvär som PMS, klimakteriebesvär och torra slemhinnor.

Man har sett att kvinnor som lider av PMS ofta är bristfälliga i GLA. Dessutom är deras förmåga att konvertera omega-6 fettsyran LA (Linoleic acid ) till GLA ofta försämrad. Här har studier visat att komplettering med GLA kan ha en signifikant effekt på PMS-symtom, inklusive huvudvärk, depression, irritabilitet och uppblåsthet. Det kan också lindra premenstruell bröstsmärta och ömhet. Forskning visar att kvinnor som har brist på denna essentiella fettsyra är överkänsliga för hormonet prolaktin, vilket bidrar till bröstsmärta. GLA skapar hormonliknande föreningar som ”stänger av” några av effekterna av prolaktin, vilket resulterar i mindre bröstsmärta. Enligt en studie om fettsyror såg man dessutom att symtom som vätskeretention, uppblåshet, akne, depression, irritabilitet och dimmigt tänkande förbättrades betydligt när man intog jättenattljusolja.

En studie som utfördes i november 2013 och publicerades i ”Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics” ville man se vilken effekt jättenattljusolja hade på värmevallningar under klimakteriet. 56 menopausala kvinnor deltog som antingen fick jättenattljusolja eller placebo under 6 veckor. Samtliga kvinnor genomgick en test innan och efter studieperioden genom att placeras på en flergradig skala som angav vilken nivå problemen omfattade. Hälften av kvinnorna fick en daglig dos av 500 mg jättenattljusolja, och den andra gruppen fick placebo. Efter 6 veckor kunde man se en tydlig sänkning av värmevallningar hos de kvinnor som fått jättenattljusolja jämfört med den grupp som fått placebo.

Jättenattljusolja vid hudproblem
Enligt studier som publicerades i ”International Journal of Cosmetic Science” kan jättenattljusolja ha fördelar vid åldersrelaterade förändringar i huden så rodnad, fasthet, grovhet och spänst.

Jättenattljusolja kan även vara anmärkningsvärt effektiv för att lindra många symtom på eksem, inklusive klåda, rodnad och ödem (5). Man har sett att personer med eksem ofta har problem med att omsätta fettsyror och omvandla LA till GLA. Detta resulterar då i brist, vilket betyder att det kan vara fördelaktigt att tillföra kroppen GLA.

Vid en studie som publicerades i Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology och Leprology mättes effekten av tillskott av jättenattljusolja hos patienter med atopisk deramtit. Deltagarna fick 500 mg jättenattljusolja per dag och efter 5 månader visade hela 95 procent av patienterna en förbättring.

Det har gjorts över 30 studier som visar jättenattljusoljans potential som ett effektivt GLA-tillskott. Mer forskning behövs dock för att styrka oljans egenskaper på olika områden. Det är även viktigt att komma ihåg att där alltid måste råda en balans mellan omega-3 och omega-6 i kroppen. Extra intag av omega-6 kräver därför att man även får i sig mer omega-3.

*Kosttillskott bör inte ersätta en varierad kost utan ska användas som ett komplement.
